About
J. Brian Szender is a gynecologic oncologist and surgeon whose research focuses on optimizing postoperative recovery and advancing surgical education in minimally invasive procedures. His most impactful work, an ultrarestrictive opioid prescription protocol for pain management after gynecologic and abdominal surgery (2018, 123 citations), challenges routine high-dose opioid prescribing in the U.S. by demonstrating that significantly fewer opioids are needed for effective home pain control. This study highlights how opioid overprescription can impair recovery and increase risks of chronic use, offering a data-driven, patient-centered alternative that has influenced perioperative care guidelines. Szender also contributes to surgical competency assessment, co-developing the Robotic Hysterectomy Assessment Score (RHAS) (2016, 27 citations), a validated tool for evaluating skill in robot-assisted hysterectomy.
