Dr. Hua-yin Yu is a leading authority in urologic oncology and surgical outcomes research, with a particular focus on the comparative effectiveness of robotic-assisted surgery. His work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of how robotic, laparoscopic, and open surgical approaches compare in terms of cost, utilization, and patient outcomes. Yu’s landmark 2012 study on the use and costs of robotic urological surgery, cited nearly 300 times, provided critical population-level evidence challenging the widespread adoption of robotic technology without proven superiority. He further demonstrated this through analyses of over 100,000 Medicare patients and nationwide inpatient samples, showing that while robotic prostatectomy offers shorter hospital stays, it comes with significantly higher costs and is highly sensitive to hospital volume. Yu also developed and refined surgical techniques, including a stepwise nerve-sparing approach during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and a method for minimizing tension to improve urinary function recovery.
