About
Hidekazu Tanaka is a leading figure in the advancement of precision radiotherapy, with a primary focus on stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). His research is centered on enhancing treatment accuracy through rigorous evaluation of patient immobilization and motion management. Tanaka’s most cited work, a 2011 study with 45 citations, clinically compared dedicated versus conventional masks for cranial stereotactic radiotherapy, demonstrating the superior positional accuracy and stability of dedicated immobilization systems when integrated with 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) image guidance. This contribution has helped establish best practices for minimizing setup errors in brain treatments. More recently, Tanaka developed a novel 6DoF robotic moving phantom to analyze the dosimetric impact of intrafraction rotation during respiratory-gated lung SBRT with real-time tumor monitoring. This innovative tool allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how both translational and rotational tumor motion affect delivered dose, addressing a critical gap in motion management.
