Harold A. Tabaie is a pioneering cardiac surgeon whose research helped establish the foundation for minimally invasive, robotically assisted coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Working at the forefront of surgical robotics in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Tabaie made landmark contributions to the clinical translation of robotic technology in cardiac surgery, most notably through his work with the ZEUS Robotic Surgical System. His most influential publication, the 2000 paper reporting the initial U.S. clinical trial of robotically assisted endoscopic CABG, has accumulated 118 citations and remains a seminal reference in the field. Alongside a 2001 multicenter prospective trial (74 citations), this body of work demonstrated the safety and feasibility of performing complex coronary anastomoses through entirely endoscopic approaches with robotic assistance. His earlier 1999 cadaveric procedural study (44 citations) laid critical technical groundwork by systematically detailing surgical steps and instrumentation requirements. Further extending the field's reach, Tabaie also developed a porcine beating-heart model to train surgeons in robotic techniques, addressing an important educational gap.
