About

Hannah Fox is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose research has fundamentally advanced the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal cancer. Her work focuses on refining surgical techniques and establishing robust evidence for TORS in complex clinical scenarios, particularly for residual, recurrent, and human papillomavirus (HPV)-related disease. A key contribution is her use of the IDEAL framework to systematically evaluate surgical innovation, as demonstrated in her highly cited 2017 study (41 citations) on TORS for recurrent oropharyngeal cancers. Fox has also provided critical data on the influence of resection margins on oncological outcomes (25 citations), and her large observational series from the UK (15 citations) offers valuable real-world evidence on primary TORS with or without adjuvant therapy. Notably, she has championed the safety and efficacy of robotic lateral oropharyngectomy following diagnostic tonsillectomy for HPV-related squamous cell carcinoma, with long-term results confirming its oncological safety. Through these studies, Fox has helped establish TORS as a standard-of-care option, improving functional outcomes while maintaining oncological rigor. Her work has accumulated over 100 citations, shaping international guidelines and inspiring a new generation of minimally invasive head and neck surgeons.
