About

Graham Purnell is a pioneering researcher in the field of robotic automation for the meat processing industry, with decades of sustained contributions that have helped shape how modern food production systems are conceived and engineered. Based at the University of Bristol's Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Research Centre (AMARC), Purnell's work has consistently focused on applying advanced robotics, force feedback control, and computer vision to some of the most challenging and labor-intensive tasks in meat manufacturing. His 1990 paper on robotic beef forequarter deboning — which garnered 30 citations — represents a landmark early effort to integrate continuous path planning and carcass-specific databases into automated cutting systems. This foundational work paved the way for broader investigations into robotic butchery and evisceration of pig and beef carcasses, including two-dimensional spine modelling to guide robotic evisceration procedures. His later survey papers on robotic equipment and automation in meat processing (1998, 2013) demonstrate his ongoing role as a synthesiser and communicator of progress in the field. With a body of work spanning over two decades and accumulating more than 90 citations, Purnell has made a meaningful and lasting contribution to food engineering, helping translate complex robotics research into practical solutions for a demanding industrial environment.
