Giovanni Trombetta is a leading researcher in neurorehabilitation, with a focus on leveraging robotic technologies to restore function and consciousness in patients with severe neurological impairments. His work primarily spans two critical areas: gait recovery after stroke and the treatment of disorders of consciousness (DoC). In his highly cited 2015 study on robotic neurorehabilitation in chronic stroke patients, Trombetta demonstrated the efficacy of the Lokomat robotic system for improving gait abnormalities, addressing a key disabling outcome of stroke. This work, with 50 citations, has helped establish robotic-assisted therapy as a viable intervention beyond the acute phase. More recently, Trombetta has pioneered an innovative, multimodal approach for patients with DoC.
