About
Gilberto Arantes is a leading figure in space robotics, whose work is foundational to the future of autonomous on-orbit servicing (OOS). His research centers on the critical challenge of enabling spacecraft to autonomously perform complex maneuvers, such as rendezvous and docking, with non-cooperating targets—including failed or malfunctioning satellites. Arantes’s most impactful contribution, detailed in his 2010 paper on "Far and proximity maneuvers of a constellation of service satellites," introduces a novel machine vision system for autonomous pose estimation. This work, which has garnered 21 citations, provides a practical framework for a constellation of service satellites to safely approach and interact with a customer satellite, a key step toward extending satellite lifespans and reducing space debris.
