About
Dr. Giancarlo Napoli is a leading urologic surgeon and researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced the surgical management of prostate cancer, particularly through the refinement and validation of the Retzius-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RS-RARP). His research focuses on optimizing this nerve-sparing technique to improve patient outcomes, with key contributions demonstrating its safety and efficacy even in high-risk and complex cases. With over 140 citations across his most influential papers, Napoli’s work has shown that RS-RARP can be successfully adopted by surgeons in the learning curve and that prostate volume does not compromise functional or oncological results. He has also pioneered comparative studies on postoperative pain management, such as evaluating suprapubic cystostomy versus urethral catheters, and has been at the forefront of implementing RS-RARP with next-generation robotic platforms like the Hugo™ RAS system. Notably, his large single-institution series on high-risk prostate cancer patients provides crucial evidence that this approach is a viable option for challenging cases. Through his meticulous research and technical innovations, Napoli continues to shape modern urologic oncology, offering patients a path to better continence and potency preservation without sacrificing cancer control.
