About
Gerald Tay is a pioneering surgeon at the forefront of transoral robotic surgery (TORS), dedicated to expanding the boundaries of minimally invasive head and neck oncology. His research focuses on developing novel surgical techniques and technologies to overcome the anatomical limitations of the oral cavity, particularly for complex base of tongue cancers. Tay’s major contributions include the first cadaveric study validating the EndoMaster robot-assisted system for TORS, demonstrating its enhanced maneuverability with dual robotic arms for precise tissue grasping and dissection. This work, cited 23 times, laid critical groundwork for integrating flexible endoscopic platforms into robotic head and neck surgery. He also introduced a groundbreaking approach for patients with trismus (limited mouth opening), a condition that traditionally precludes TORS. By combining a midline mandibular osteotomy with robotic resection, Tay successfully treated a patient with recurrent base of tongue cancer, achieving adequate surgical access where standard TORS was impossible.
