About
George Nikolich is a leading figure in aeolian geomorphology and environmental robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the measurement of wind-driven sediment transport and soil erosion. His primary research integrates field instrumentation, robotic systems, and process-based modeling to understand how wind interacts with arid and semi-arid landscapes. Nikolich’s major contribution is the development of novel, autonomous methods for in situ data collection, moving beyond traditional, labor-intensive field campaigns. His 2017 paper, “Ground robotic measurement of aeolian processes” (24 citations), established a new paradigm by demonstrating how robotic platforms can capture high-resolution, spatially extensive data on sediment flux and its environmental controls. Building on this, his 2019 work, “Rapid In Situ Characterization of Soil Erodibility With a Field Deployable Robot” (17 citations), directly addressed the challenge of predicting wind erosion by enabling rapid, multivariate assessment of soil properties—including grain size, moisture, and compaction—under real-world conditions. This work is critical for distinguishing erosion mechanisms from plowing versus fluid shear. With a growing citation impact, Nikolich’s research is shaping next-generation land management and dust-emission models, making him a pivotal voice in the study of Earth’s critical zone processes.
