About

George E. Sandusky is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose work centers on advancing the precision of nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma. His major contributions lie in the clinical translation of folate-targeted intraoperative fluorescence imaging using OTL38, a novel agent that binds to folate receptors overexpressed on many kidney tumors. Sandusky’s landmark 2016 study, which reported the first three cases of OTL38-guided robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, demonstrated how real-time fluorescence could help surgeons continuously visualize tumor margins during resection, thereby preserving healthy kidney tissue without compromising oncologic clearance. This work, cited 43 times, established a proof-of-concept for targeted molecular imaging in urologic oncology. His subsequent 2021 investigation expanded on safety and efficacy, further validating OTL38’s role in enhancing surgical precision. By integrating advanced robotics with targeted fluorescence, Sandusky has helped bridge the gap between diagnostic imaging and intraoperative decision-making, offering patients improved functional outcomes. His research continues to shape the evolution of minimally invasive kidney cancer surgery, making him a key figure in the field of image-guided oncologic surgery.
