Dr. Garrett S. Matsunaga is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of robotic-assisted surgery, particularly in the treatment of genitourinary cancers. His primary research focuses on the development and refinement of minimally invasive techniques for radical cystectomy and prostatectomy. Dr. Matsunaga’s most significant contribution is his landmark 2006 paper on robot-assisted laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomy with totally intracorporeal ileal neobladder, a highly complex procedure that demonstrated the feasibility of performing the entire reconstructive phase inside the body using the da Vinci Surgical System.
