About
Gilvandro César de Medeiros is a rising leader in dairy cattle genetics, whose research is reshaping how we understand and improve udder conformation in the era of precision agriculture. His work centers on the genetic and genomic analysis of traits captured by automatic milking systems (AMS), or milking robots, a technology rapidly transforming modern dairy farms. De Medeiros’s key contribution lies in demonstrating that udder conformation data recorded by these robotic systems are not only highly heritable but also genetically tractable, enabling more objective and welfare-conscious selection. His seminal 2024 study, which has already garnered 20 citations, was the first to estimate genetic parameters for Cartesian coordinate-based udder traits in North American Holsteins, linking these novel metrics directly to milk yield, cow health, and workability. Building on this, his 2025 genome-wide association study identified specific genomic regions and quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with these AMS-derived traits, paving the way for marker-assisted selection. By merging high-throughput phenotyping with functional genomics, de Medeiros is providing the dairy industry with powerful tools to enhance both productivity and animal well-being in automated systems.
