Franz Werner is a multidisciplinary robotics researcher whose work spans two compelling domains: mobile robot olfaction and socially assistive robotics for elder care. His early contributions, beginning in the mid-2000s, advanced the field of gas source localization, where he developed machine learning and sensor-based methods enabling mobile robots to detect and declare proximity to gas sources in turbulent indoor environments — work that garnered nearly 100 citations across multiple studies and remains foundational in robot olfaction research. Werner's most influential contributions, however, emerged from his sustained investigation into humanoid robots as companions and interfaces within intelligent home environments for aging populations.
