About
Fabio Pedraza is a plant geneticist and molecular biologist whose research has made meaningful contributions to the genomics of common bean (*Phaseolus vulgaris* L.), one of the world's most important legume crops. His work has centered on the development of molecular markers, particularly microsatellites — also known as simple sequence repeats (SSRs) — which serve as essential tools for genetic diversity studies, plant breeding, and genomic mapping. In a notable 2009 study, Pedraza and colleagues developed gene-based microsatellite markers derived from Andean common bean accessions, demonstrating the utility of cDNA library screening as an efficient strategy for discovering genic SSRs; this work has garnered 73 citations and remains a key reference in legume genomics. A companion study from the same year, with 39 citations, further expanded the marker toolkit by demonstrating the effectiveness of non-enriched, small-insert genomic library screening for SSR identification. Together, these contributions have provided the broader research community with valuable genetic resources that continue to support crop improvement efforts, diversity assessments, and breeding programs for common bean across Latin America and beyond.
