In his highly cited 2021 study, "Racial Disparity in the Surgical Management of Diverticular Disease," Zervos utilized a national database to reveal significant disparities in the utilization of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for diverticulitis among minority populations. This landmark paper, with 15 citations, demonstrated that while MIS adoption has increased overall, Black and Hispanic patients are substantially less likely to receive this approach compared to White patients—even after controlling for clinical factors.
