Elizabeth A. Blackburn is a pioneering molecular biologist whose groundbreaking work on telomeres and telomerase reshaped our understanding of cellular aging and cancer. Her key research areas include chromosome biology, cellular senescence, and the molecular mechanisms of aging. Blackburn’s most celebrated contribution is the discovery of telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes telomere ends, along with the elucidation of telomere structure and function—work that earned her the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Her studies revealed how telomere shortening limits cell division and how telomerase reactivation is implicated in cancer and aging.
