About
Donglai Shen is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the surgical management of complex renal and vascular diseases. His primary research focuses on robotic-assisted surgery for kidney cancer, with a particular emphasis on inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomy—a highly challenging procedure for renal cell carcinoma with tumor thrombus. Shen’s major contributions include developing and validating a modified sequential vascular control strategy for level III–IV IVC thrombectomy that mimics the open “milking” technique, allowing for early release of the porta hepatis and reduced cardiopulmonary bypass time. His cumulative sum analysis of 120 cases established the operator learning curve for this complex procedure, providing a roadmap for surgical training. Shen has also made significant contributions to partial nephrectomy techniques, comparing robotic and laparoscopic approaches for completely endophytic and upper pole renal tumors, and has pioneered robotic segmental IVC resection. His work on robot-assisted kidney transplantation with a modified hypothermia technique represents another innovative frontier.
