About

Dirk Boehmer is a leading radiation oncologist whose research focuses on improving the precision and efficacy of prostate cancer radiotherapy. His major contributions center on quantifying and correcting for prostate motion during treatment, a critical challenge in delivering high-dose radiation while sparing healthy tissue. In his highly cited 2012 study (32 citations), Boehmer demonstrated that the prostate undergoes significant inter-fraction rotation, which can be accurately measured using kilovoltage X-ray imaging of implanted fiducial markers. This work built on his earlier 2010 paper (30 citations), which characterized residual translational and rotational errors even after image-guided correction, providing essential data for developing more robust treatment margins and adaptive radiotherapy strategies. More recently, Boehmer has advanced the field by investigating PSMA PET-based stereotactic body radiotherapy for locally recurrent prostate cancer after definitive first-line therapy (2023). This innovative work leverages molecular imaging to precisely target circumscribed recurrences, offering a potential salvage option for patients with limited treatment alternatives. Through his systematic investigation of geometric uncertainties and emerging applications of molecular imaging, Boehmer has made lasting contributions to the safety and effectiveness of prostate cancer radiotherapy.
