About
D. Sabahi is a leading aerospace engineer at Honeybee Robotics, specializing in planetary sampling and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) for Mars and asteroid exploration. Their most significant contribution is the development of the Pneumatic Sampler (P-Sampler) for JAXA’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, a NASA-provided system designed to capture surface material from Phobos—a critical step toward understanding the formation of Mars’ moons (16 citations). Sabahi also pioneered the RedWater system, a TRL 4/5 technology that drills into Martian mid-latitude ice deposits and melts water for extraction, targeting locations identified by SHARAD radar data. This work, published in multiple papers (2021–2023, totaling 19 citations), directly supports future human missions by enabling water ISRU. Sabahi’s innovations bridge terrestrial drilling techniques with spaceflight requirements, positioning them as a key figure in advancing sustainable off-world exploration. Their work on P-Sampler and RedWater exemplifies how robotic systems can unlock resources and scientific knowledge from planetary surfaces.
