Christopher D. Wallbridge is a human-robot interaction researcher whose work spans social robotics, second language learning, spatial reasoning, and autonomous systems. He is perhaps best known for his foundational contributions to robot-assisted language tutoring, most notably through his highly cited 2018 guidelines for designing social robots as second language tutors (160 citations), which helped establish a principled framework for deploying robots in educational contexts. His involvement in the large-scale L2TOR project — in which a NAO robot taught English vocabulary to nearly 200 Dutch children — demonstrated the real-world viability of robotic language instruction at scale. Beyond education, Wallbridge has made meaningful contributions to spatial referring expression generation, exploring how robots can communicate naturally and dynamically with humans in shared environments.
