Dr. Choichiro Ozu is a pioneering Japanese urologic surgeon whose work has centered on advancing robotic-assisted surgery for prostate and bladder cancers. His major contributions lie in systematically evaluating and implementing robotic techniques within Japan’s healthcare system. In a landmark 2012 study, he provided the first prospective comparison in Japan between robot-assisted and open radical cystectomy, demonstrating the robotic approach’s superior perioperative outcomes. His 2013 analysis of 200 initial robot-assisted radical prostatectomies (RARP) by a single surgeon critically mapped the learning curve, establishing benchmarks for safe adoption. Dr. Ozu also reported the first case of salvage RARP following heavy ion radiotherapy, expanding treatment options for recurrent prostate cancer.
