About
Chilai Chen is a rising innovator in the field of bio-inspired robotics, with a focused expertise in Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles (FW-MAVs). His research centers on translating the extraordinary flight mechanics of insects—particularly dragonflies—into compact, high-performance aerial robots. Chen’s major contribution is the development of novel, resonant, direct-driven flapping mechanisms that enable efficient and agile flight in small-scale robots. His flagship work, "HiFly-Dragon," introduces a dragonfly-inspired platform that mimics the insect’s ability to independently control its four wings, overcoming significant design challenges in actuation and stability. This paper has already garnered 13 citations since its 2024 publication, signaling strong interest from the robotics community. More recently, Chen has advanced the field with structural designs for gear-based flapping actuation and parallel-coupled flight control, paving the way for tailless, twin-winged robots. His work is notable for bridging fundamental biomechanics with practical engineering, offering a blueprint for future FW-MAVs that could revolutionize surveillance, environmental monitoring, and search-and-rescue operations.
