C. McCarthy is a key figure in the development of interplanetary telecommunications, with a primary research focus on deep-space relay networks and the infrastructure needed to support robotic planetary exploration. McCarthy’s most notable contribution is the design and implementation of the first international Martian telecommunications network, a collaborative effort between NASA and ESA. This network, leveraging orbiters like Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, and Mars Express, provided critical UHF relay support for the Mars Exploration Rovers beginning in 2004. This work, detailed in a highly influential 2004 paper (18 citations), enabled the rovers to transmit vast amounts of scientific data back to Earth, dramatically increasing the efficiency and scope of surface operations.
