About

Brian Leckie is a pioneering figure in high-Arctic astronomy, whose work has opened a new frontier for ground-based observational research. His primary research areas include site testing for astronomical observatories in extreme polar environments and the development of autonomous robotic instrumentation. Leckie’s most significant contribution is the first systematic assessment of the mountains on northwestern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, as potential astronomical observing sites. His 2010 study, which has garnered 19 citations, demonstrated that these peaks—among the highest within 10 degrees of the North Pole—rise above a persistent low-level thermal inversion, offering cold, dry, and dark conditions rivaling those of the Antarctic plateau. To enable this research, Leckie designed and deployed the *Inuksuit*—a network of robotic astronomical site-testing stations that operate autonomously through the harsh polar winter. His technical expertise also extends to optical instrumentation, including work on the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph’s on-instrument wavefront sensor. By proving that the Canadian High Arctic can host world-class astronomical facilities, Leckie has laid the groundwork for future observatories that could exploit the unique advantages of the polar night.
