About
Balint Gucsi is a researcher at the forefront of human-robot interaction (HRI), specializing in socially aware robotics and multimodal data analysis. His work centers on two key challenges: designing robots that can intuitively learn user preferences without causing annoyance, and systematically measuring the nuanced social and emotional responses people have to robot behavior. In his highly cited 2020 paper, “To Ask or Not to Ask,” Gucsi introduced a novel preference elicitation framework for social robots, using a simulated office environment with a TIAGo Steel robot to balance information gathering against user tolerance—a critical step toward more natural, less intrusive human-robot collaboration. More recently, in 2025, he co-created the HRI-SENSE dataset, a rich multimodal resource capturing participants’ facial expressions, body movements, and psychological states like frustration and satisfaction during interactions with robots. This dataset provides an essential foundation for developing emotionally intelligent robots.
