About
B. A. Weaver is a key figure in the analysis and calibration of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), one of the most ambitious cosmological surveys ever undertaken. Their research focuses on the critical challenges of large-scale structure measurement, particularly correcting for the systematic incompleteness introduced by the robotic fiber positioners in DESI’s focal plane. Weaver’s most influential work, “Characterization of DESI fiber assignment incompleteness effect on 2-point clustering and mitigation methods for DR1 analysis” (2025, 20 citations), provides the foundational framework for ensuring unbiased clustering measurements from DESI’s first data release. They further advanced the field by developing methods to produce alternate realizations of fiber assignment, enabling robust clustering analyses in both data and simulations (2024, 10 citations). Earlier, Weaver contributed to the astrometric calibration and performance verification of DESI’s 5,020-fiber focal plane (2023, 4 citations), a technical achievement essential for the instrument’s success. By tackling the hardware-induced selection effects that could otherwise distort our understanding of cosmic structure, Weaver’s work ensures that DESI can deliver on its promise to produce the largest 3D map of the universe and constrain dark energy.
