About
Ary Setijadi Prihatmanto is a leading Indonesian roboticist whose work bridges human-robot interaction, artificial intelligence, and autonomous decision-making. His research centers on enabling humanoid robots—particularly the NAO platform—to perceive, understand, and act within human environments. A hallmark of his contributions is the integration of multimodal control, as demonstrated in his highly cited work on combining Indonesian speech recognition with hand gesture recognition to command humanoid robots, using a Microsoft Kinect v2 for natural interaction. Prihatmanto has also made significant advances in robot manipulation and game-playing, designing kinematics models and trajectory planning that allow NAO to physically play tic-tac-toe. His influence extends to multi-agent systems and cognitive architectures, where he has applied the OODA Loop for real-time decision-making in robot soccer and implemented graph databases for the OpenCog artificial general intelligence framework. With over 60 citations across his top papers, Prihatmanto’s work has shaped the development of socially aware robots, such as the Lumen Social Robot, which serves as an exhibition guide. His research continues to push the boundaries of how robots learn, interact, and collaborate with humans in dynamic, real-world settings.
