About
Anton Darmenov is a leading figure in atmospheric science, whose work has fundamentally advanced our ability to model and reanalyze global aerosols. His primary research focuses on aerosol data assimilation, reanalysis, and the characterization of biomass burning emissions. As a key contributor to NASA’s Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), Darmenov co-authored the seminal 2017 paper evaluating the MERRA-2 aerosol reanalysis, which has garnered over 929 citations and serves as a cornerstone for the satellite-era climate record. His impact extends to constraining one of the most uncertain aerosol sources: biomass burning. His 2020 intercomparison of six global biomass burning emission datasets (347 citations) provides a critical framework for reducing model uncertainty. Furthermore, Darmenov developed a radiative transfer interface to simulate the UV Aerosol Index from GEOS-5 fields, enabling direct evaluation of the MERRA Aerosol Reanalysis against OMI satellite data (262 citations).
