About

Alma Rahat is a leading researcher at the intersection of Bayesian optimisation and human-robot interaction (HRI). Her primary contributions lie in developing principled frameworks for decision-making under uncertainty, with a particular focus on the exploration-exploitation trade-off in optimisation. In her highly cited work, "Greed Is Good: Exploration and Exploitation Trade-offs in Bayesian Optimisation" (2021, 120 citations), Rahat systematically investigates how acquisition functions like Expected Improvement (EI) and Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) navigate the Pareto frontier between exploration and exploitation to locate global optima of continuous functions. This work provides critical insights for practitioners in machine learning and engineering design. More recently, Rahat has advanced the modelling of human trust in autonomous systems. Her 2023 paper on modelling human trust in robots during repeated interactions addresses the real-time challenge of calibrating trust to prevent over- or under-reliance in HRI. By developing mathematical models of trust dynamics, she is paving the way for safer, more adaptive human-robot collaboration. Rahat’s work bridges theoretical optimisation with socially impactful robotics, making her a distinctive voice in both fields.
