Akiyuki Wakita is a pioneering surgeon advancing the field of esophageal oncology through the application of robotic-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy (RATE). His research focuses on improving surgical precision and oncological outcomes for esophageal cancer, with a particular emphasis on optimizing lymph node dissection. Wakita’s most significant contribution is demonstrating that RATE enables more extensive and safer lymph node dissection around the left recurrent laryngeal nerve—a technically demanding area critical for staging and survival—compared to conventional thoracoscopic surgery.
