About
Aki Kobayashi is an innovative thoracic surgeon and researcher at the forefront of minimally invasive robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS). Based in Japan, Kobayashi has made significant contributions to the evolution of reduced-port surgical techniques, particularly in developing and refining dual-portal robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (DRATS) as a compelling alternative to conventional multiportal approaches. His landmark 2023 multicenter study introducing DRATS, conducted across three Japanese institutions and accumulating 9 citations, helped establish a foundational framework for this emerging technique. Building on this work, Kobayashi pioneered the novel "neoDRATS" approach in 2024, an ingenious advancement that eliminates the need for skilled surgical assistants by deploying all four robotic arms independently during complex anatomical lung procedures. He has further expanded the boundaries of uniportal RATS by developing specialized techniques for mediastinal tumor resection via the lateral intercostal approach. Through his research, Kobayashi addresses critical practical challenges in thoracic surgery, including reducing invasiveness, improving patient outcomes, and making advanced robotic techniques more accessible. His work represents a meaningful step toward standardizing next-generation minimally invasive thoracic procedures in Japan and internationally.
