Adam Bischoff is pioneering the frontier of advanced additive manufacturing, with a sharp focus on the programmable structuring of high-performance polymers. His research centers on two transformative areas: controlling crystallinity in thermoplastics and directing molecular alignment in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) during 3D printing. Bischoff’s major contribution is the development of "CRAFT" (Lithographic Crystallinity Regulation in Additive Fabrication of Thermoplastics), a technique that allows for precise spatial control over the crystalline and amorphous regions in semicrystalline polyolefins—a critical balance for tuning mechanical performance and processability. This work, already cited 9 times, challenges the limitations of traditional manufacturing like injection molding. In parallel, his innovative approach to spatially tailoring LCE alignment during Digital Light Process 3D printing enables the creation of complex, anisotropic smart materials for soft robotics and actuators.
