About
Dr. Ada Kim is a rising leader at the intersection of human-robot interaction (HRI), virtual reality (VR), and adolescent-centered design. Her research focuses on how young people collaborate with and perceive social robots, particularly through immersive, asymmetric VR environments. In her most cited work, “I Am the Robot: Teen Collaboration in an Asymmetric, Virtual Reality Game” (2022, 4 citations), Dr. Kim pioneered a participatory, human-centered design (HCD) methodology to develop a collaborative VR game that allowed teens to step into the role of a robot. This novel approach revealed critical insights into how teenagers conceptualize robot agency, trust, and teamwork, offering a new framework for designing more intuitive and engaging human-robot systems. By centering youth voices in the design process, her work challenges traditional top-down robotics development and has already influenced emerging HRI curricula. Though early in her career, Dr. Kim’s commitment to inclusive, participatory methods positions her as a key voice in shaping the next generation of socially aware robotic technologies.
