Thromboembolic disease refers to a group of cardiovascular conditions in which blood clots form within the vascular system and travel to obstruct blood flow, most commonly manifesting as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. In the context of robotic-assisted and minimally invasive surgery, this condition carries significant clinical relevance because surgical procedures — particularly pelvic operations for urological or gynecological conditions such as endometrial cancer — can elevate a patient's risk of abnormal clot formation due to prolonged immobility, vessel injury, and altered coagulation dynamics. Robotic surgical platforms introduce additional considerations, such as steep Trendelenburg positioning and extended operative times, which may further influence thromboembolic risk profiles. Understanding and mitigating this risk matters because undetected or untreated thromboembolic events can be life-threatening and substantially increase healthcare costs and hospital readmission rates. Prophylactic strategies, including pharmacological anticoagulation and mechanical compression devices, are therefore integral components of perioperative planning in robotic surgical programs.
