The sublingual gland is one of the three major paired salivary glands in the human body, located beneath the tongue in the floor of the mouth. It is the smallest of the major salivary glands and produces primarily mucous saliva that lubricates and aids digestion. In the context of surgical robotics and clinical AI, the sublingual gland is relevant as both a target of surgical intervention and a critical anatomical landmark to preserve during minimally invasive procedures. Conditions such as ranulas (mucous retention cysts), malignant neoplasms, and obstructive salivary disorders often require precise surgical management in the confined space of the oral floor, where the gland lies in close proximity to Wharton's duct, the submandibular gland, and vital neurovascular structures. Robotic-assisted transoral surgery platforms, such as the da Vinci system, are increasingly employed to access this region with enhanced dexterity and visualization, reducing the need for external cervical incisions and improving cosmetic and functional outcomes for patients.
