About
Yu Onodera is a leading surgical researcher whose work centers on improving outcomes in esophageal cancer surgery, with a particular focus on preventing anastomotic leakage—a life-threatening complication after esophagectomy. His most impactful contribution is the development and validation of laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) as a predictive tool for gastric conduit perfusion. In a landmark 2023 study involving 326 patients, Onodera demonstrated that measuring blood flow ratios in the gastric conduit with LDF can reliably identify patients at high risk for anastomotic leakage, enabling proactive surgical interventions. This work, which has garnered 11 citations, represents a significant advance in perioperative risk stratification and has the potential to reduce morbidity in esophageal cancer patients. Onodera’s research bridges the gap between quantitative perfusion assessment and clinical decision-making, offering a practical, evidence-based approach to one of thoracic surgery’s most persistent challenges. His findings are already influencing surgical protocols and inspiring further investigation into intraoperative monitoring technologies.
