About
Thalia Petropoulou is a pioneering colorectal surgeon whose work is redefining the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery. Her research centers on robotic-assisted techniques, with a particular focus on improving anastomotic methods and sphincter preservation in colorectal cancer. She led the landmark MIRCAST study (42 citations), which compared intracorporeal versus extracorporeal anastomosis in right hemicolectomy, providing critical evidence to guide surgical decision-making. Petropoulou has also demonstrated that the robotic platform can significantly increase sphincter preservation rates for patients with mid and low rectal cancer, a major quality-of-life advancement. She is a true innovator in surgical technology, having performed the world’s first live AI-assisted augmented reality robotic colon surgery with instrument deocclusion, and the first robotic CME in Europe using augmented reality tools. Her recent work on robotic natural orifice transluminal extraction colectomy and no-incision colectomy (2025) further expands the possibilities of scarless surgery.
