About
Smadar Egert is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the vertical profiling of mineral dust and aerosol transport, with a particular emphasis on the eastern Mediterranean basin. Her most cited work provides critical new insights into the structure and evolution of the unprecedented September 2015 dust storm over Israel, employing an innovative network of eight ceilometers alongside auxiliary measurements. This study, which has garnered 14 citations, significantly advanced the understanding of how extreme dust events develop and propagate at high temporal and spatial resolution. By integrating ground-based remote sensing with meteorological data, Egert’s research has improved the ability to characterize dust plume dynamics, offering valuable tools for air quality monitoring and climate modeling in a region highly susceptible to Saharan dust intrusions. Her contributions are particularly notable for demonstrating the power of multi-sensor networks in capturing the complex vertical structure of dust storms, a key factor in assessing their environmental and health impacts.
