About
Rosario Morales-Espinosa is a leading microbiologist whose research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of virulence and antibiotic resistance in emerging and nosocomial pathogens. Her work primarily investigates how bacteria like *Escherichia coli* and *Klebsiella pneumoniae* express their virulome—the complete set of virulence genes—in response to environmental pressures, including antibiotics and disinfectants. A major contribution is her pioneering use of in vitro infection models with human epithelial cell lines to reveal the collective involvement of virulence markers, particularly in *E. coli* as an emerging periodontal pathogen. Her studies on *K. pneumoniae* have demonstrated extensive expression of virulome genes linked to multidrug resistance (MDR) genotypes, directly addressing a critical health problem that increases mortality in hospital settings. Although her most-cited papers are recent (2023–2024), they are already garnering attention (3–4 citations), signaling growing impact in the field. By connecting genotyping with functional expression, Morales-Espinosa provides vital insights for developing new strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance and treat persistent infections.
