About
Dr. R. Kuhweide is a head and neck surgeon whose work focuses on advancing minimally invasive approaches to complex anatomical regions, particularly the parapharyngeal space (PPS). Their most cited study, a 2015 case series on transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for four benign parapharyngeal tumours, demonstrates a pioneering effort to apply robotic technology to this challenging area. By using the daVinci surgical system, Kuhweide showed that direct, transoral access to the PPS is feasible, offering a less morbid alternative to traditional external incisions. This work, cited six times, has helped lay the groundwork for broader adoption of TORS in skull base and parapharyngeal surgery. While their publication record is focused, its impact lies in highlighting the potential for robotic precision to reduce patient recovery time and surgical risk in anatomically dense regions. Kuhweide’s contribution is a valuable step in the evolution of head and neck oncology, encouraging further exploration of robotic techniques for tumours that were once considered inaccessible without significant collateral damage.
