About
Marcello Valdatta is a space systems engineer whose research centers on active debris removal and in-orbit servicing technologies. His most notable contribution is the REDEMPTION experiment (REmoval of DEbris using Material with Phase Transition: IONospherical tests), a microgravity investigation proposed by the Space Robotic Laboratory at the University of Bologna. Selected by ESA experts, this pioneering study explored the use of phase-change materials and foams to capture and de-orbit space debris—a critical challenge for sustainable space operations. While his highly specialized work has garnered focused recognition (with his key paper cited twice), Valdatta’s conceptual contribution to non-contact debris mitigation strategies has informed subsequent research in the field. His work bridges materials science and orbital mechanics, offering a novel approach to clearing hazardous debris from low Earth orbit. As a member of the SRL team, Valdatta represents a generation of engineers tackling the growing orbital congestion problem through creative, low-cost experimental platforms.
