About
Joel Dunning is a prominent thoracic surgeon and surgical innovator whose research has fundamentally shaped the fields of minimally invasive thoracic surgery and robotic surgical training. Based at James Cook University Hospital in the UK, Dunning has dedicated his career to advancing safer, less traumatic surgical approaches for lung cancer patients while simultaneously developing rigorous frameworks for training the next generation of surgeons. His landmark contributions to robotic surgery training are particularly noteworthy. Through structured Delphi processes — collaborative expert consensus methodologies — Dunning helped define the Thoracic Robotic Curriculum (50 citations) and pioneered a proficiency-based train-the-trainer programme for robotic surgery (105 citations), establishing internationally recognised standards for safe robotic adoption. His work on uniportal robotic-assisted thoracic surgery has pushed technical boundaries, offering patients less invasive alternatives to conventional approaches, while his involvement in the VIOLET randomised controlled trial (88 citations) provided crucial evidence supporting video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy over open surgery for patient recovery. His exploration of microlobectomy and ultrasonic energy sealing further demonstrates a commitment to surgical refinement. With research spanning clinical trials, registry data, and curriculum development, Dunning's work has collectively accumulated over 400 citations, cementing his influence across surgical education and thoracic oncology globally.
