About
Jan Baumgart is a pioneering surgical researcher at the forefront of gastrointestinal (GI) bioelectronics and minimally invasive theranostics. His work centers on developing intelligent, wirelessly communicating devices to diagnose and treat complex, multisegmental GI dysmotilities—conditions like chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction that can be life-threatening. As a key contributor to the interdisciplinary INTAKT project, Baumgart has made major contributions by establishing robotic, minimally invasive surgical approaches for implanting these novel devices. His landmark 2020 study demonstrated that robotic placement of multilocular GI electrical stimulation devices yields consistent, reproducible effects in a porcine model, significantly reducing tissue trauma compared to conventional laparotomy. This work, along with his translational development of prototype GI mock-up devices, has laid the critical groundwork for moving from concept to clinical reality. Though early in its citation history, his research is foundational for a new class of "theranostic" implants that combine sensing and electrostimulation. Baumgart’s vision of a distributed, wireless network of GI devices promises a paradigm shift in how we treat severe motility disorders, offering hope for patients with limited therapeutic options.
