About
Greg Wilding is a leading urologic oncologist whose research has fundamentally advanced the surgical management of bladder cancer, particularly through the adoption and refinement of robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC). As a founding member of the International Robotic Cystectomy Consortium (IRCC), Wilding spearheaded the creation of a global, multi-institutional database that has become the definitive source for evidence-based outcomes in robotic bladder surgery. His landmark 2010 study on the learning curve for RARC (238 citations) established that surgeons require approximately 20-30 cases to achieve proficiency, a critical benchmark that has shaped training protocols worldwide. Wilding’s work on surgical margins (112 citations) demonstrated that positive margins after RARC are a significant predictor of poor prognosis, while his analysis of lymphadenectomy (105 citations) showed that lymph node yields are comparable to open surgery and improve with surgeon experience. By leveraging the IRCC’s collective power, Wilding has provided the urologic community with robust, generalizable data that single-institution studies cannot offer. His contributions have not only validated RARC as a safe, effective alternative to open cystectomy but have also established the IRCC as a model for collaborative surgical research.
