About
Georgia Lahr is a pioneer in molecular pathology, whose work has fundamentally advanced the detection of genetic markers in archival tissue. Her primary research focuses on the development of single-cell molecular analysis techniques and their application to thyroid cancer diagnostics. Lahr’s major contribution lies in demonstrating that reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) can be reliably performed on RNA extracted from single cells procured from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) archival material. Her landmark 2000 paper, "RT-PCR from Archival Single Cells Is a Suitable Method to Analyze Specific Gene Expression," with 36 citations, established a critical methodological foundation for studying gene expression in rare cell populations when fresh tissue is unavailable. Building on this, her highly cited 2000 study on papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) showed that laser-microdissected archival cells could be used to detect RET oncogene activation, providing a powerful tool for differentiating PTC from other thyroid neoplasias. This work has been instrumental in enabling retrospective molecular studies and refining diagnostic accuracy, cementing Lahr’s reputation as a key innovator in the field of molecular pathology.
