About
Francesco Santoni‐Rugiu is a pioneering cardiac surgeon whose work has advanced the frontiers of minimally invasive arrhythmia surgery. His key research areas include robotic-assisted cardiac procedures, epicardial ablation techniques, and the surgical management of atrial fibrillation. His most notable contribution is the first-ever robotic endoscopic epicardial isolation of the pulmonary veins using microwave energy, performed in a patient with chronic atrial fibrillation. This landmark 2004 study, cited 37 times, demonstrated the feasibility of combining robotic precision with epicardial ablation to treat arrhythmias without the need for sternotomy or cardiopulmonary bypass. By proving that a minimally invasive, off-pump approach could effectively isolate arrhythmogenic foci, Santoni‐Rugiu helped pave the way for modern hybrid ablation strategies. His work has inspired subsequent innovations in robotic cardiac surgery and continues to influence surgeons seeking to reduce procedural trauma while maintaining efficacy. For students and researchers, Santoni‐Rugiu’s career exemplifies how a single, bold clinical innovation can redefine surgical standards and open new therapeutic avenues.
