About

Ege Altan is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of neural engineering and bio-inspired robotics, whose work spans from cyborg insect platforms to brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) for paralysis. His early landmark study, "Behaving cyborg locusts for standoff chemical sensing" (2017, 8 citations), introduced a revolutionary approach to autonomous sensing by harnessing the acute olfactory capabilities of locusts, creating low-cost, swarm-deployable cyborgs for chemical detection—a concept with profound implications for environmental monitoring and defense. More recently, Altan has advanced the field of intracortical BCIs with his 2023 paper, "From monkeys to humans: observation-based EMG brain–computer interface decoders for humans with paralysis" (8 citations). This work tackles a critical challenge: training neural decoders when paralysis prevents direct movement. By translating observation-based decoding strategies from non-human primates to human patients, Altan’s research enables individuals with paralysis to control virtual limbs and robotic arms with unprecedented accuracy. His contributions bridge fundamental neuroscience and practical rehabilitation technology, demonstrating how cross-species insights can restore motor function. With a growing citation footprint, Altan is shaping the future of assistive neurotechnology and biohybrid systems.
