About
Ajay Kumar Dewan is a leading head and neck surgical oncologist whose work has significantly advanced the application of robotic surgery in the management of complex oropharyngeal cancers. His primary research focuses on the technical feasibility and oncologic safety of transoral robotic surgery (TORS), particularly in challenging salvage settings. Dewan’s most notable contribution is his pioneering demonstration that TORS can be effectively and safely performed for recurrent or residual head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, offering a minimally invasive option for patients with limited alternatives. His landmark 2015 study on salvage TORS, which has garnered 29 citations, provided critical evidence on achieving adequate surgical margins and acceptable safety profiles in this high-risk population. Additionally, his preliminary experience paper from 2014, with 11 citations, helped establish the feasibility of TORS in the Indian tertiary care context, expanding access to advanced robotic techniques. Through these works, Dewan has not only validated TORS as a viable salvage strategy but has also contributed to the global adoption of robotic surgery in head and neck oncology, directly improving outcomes for patients facing recurrent disease.
